RuneScape Dragonwilds Announced

A New Chapter in the RuneScape Universe

The Legend Continues Since 2001

Originally released in 2001, RuneScape is one of the most iconic and enduring MMORPGs in gaming history. Now, over two decades later, developer Jagex has announced its ambitious new project: RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a survival MMO set in the same beloved universe.

Built in Unreal Engine 5, Dragonwilds brings a modern touch to RuneScape’s classic fantasy world, delivering vastly improved visuals while preserving the charm and depth that fans have cherished for years. Unlike the original, which focused heavily on open-ended progression, Dragonwilds introduces survival mechanics, allowing players to gather resources, build structures, and harness magical abilities to stay alive in a dangerous new land.

Set on Ashenfall, a forgotten continent within the RuneScape universe, players will embark on a perilous adventure where the ultimate goal is to slay the newly awakened dragon queen. The game can be played solo or with up to three friends, making it a flexible experience for both lone adventurers and cooperative groups. Familiar mechanics from RuneScape—such as crafting, skill progression, and combat—return in Dragonwilds, but with a fresh twist tailored to the survival genre.

A closed alpha test took place in September, allowing select players to experience the game early and provide valuable feedback. Based on input from the community, Jagex has fine-tuned many aspects of the game to better align with player expectations. As a result, anticipation for Dragonwilds is at an all-time high among both RuneScape veterans and survival MMO enthusiasts.

With its blend of classic RuneScape elements and modern survival gameplay, RuneScape: Dragonwilds is shaping up to be one of the most exciting MMO releases in recent years. The game is set to enter early access on Steam in spring 2025, and fans are eagerly awaiting their chance to explore this new frontier.
