With a major announcement, Ubisoft revealed its new partnership with Tencent to form a new subsidiary.
The new subsidiary will oversee the company’s top three franchises and several of its studios. Insider-Gaming reported that this move has stirred unease among Ubisoft employees, who are now bracing for potential widespread layoffs, either in the lead-up to or following the completion of the deal with Tencent. They also report multiple employees reaching out to express their concerns and acquiring internal emails to help ease tensions.
The studio recently released the long-anticipated Assassin’s Creed: Shadows to positive reviews. The past couple of years, however, have not been great for the company, to say the least. Underperforming releases such as Star Wars: Outlaws, Prince of Persia, and Frontiers of Pandora have not helped Ubisoft’s prospects.
We hope to see the company thrive under this new direction with its long-established franchises. However, we believe Ubisoft needs to reinvent its formula and take bold creative steps moving forward.
