The long-awaited live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda now has an official release date.
Sony Pictures, in collaboration with Nintendo, will debut the film on March 26, 2027. The announcement came via Nintendo’s new app, Nintendo Today, marking a major milestone since the film was first unveiled in November 2023. At that time, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the project, revealing that he would be co-producing alongside seasoned Hollywood producer Avi Arad.

According to Variety, Wes Ball (director of The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is set to helm the adaptation. Ball will also produce the film with Joe Hartwick Jr. under their Oddball Entertainment banner. The project is being co-financed by Sony Pictures and Nintendo, with the latter taking the financial lead. While key details such as casting and plot remain under wraps, excitement continues to build. Miyamoto has assured fans that Nintendo is deeply involved in the film’s development, stating, “It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
Nintendo’s previous movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. Although we enjoyed that film at RetroPalmetto, we remain skeptical about a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda franchise. Video game adaptations have a mixed track record, with more misses than hits. Please don’t mess this up!
